Actual, “traditional” walking sims. No goal, no or few machanics, just exploration.

Really awesome and creepy horror game. It can be easy to get lost, but worth the long stroll to the finish. I really loved the atmosphere and writing, and the nods to Lovecraft. The original on Game Jolt has been remade - grab the 2017 version from Itch.Read more...

Sanctuary is a dark and atmospheric walking sim that takes place in a supernatural landscape of temples and cubes. It’s actually winnable (follow the paths and the music), and has great sound design and cohesive level design. I really like the aesthetic (somewhere between Dark Souls and Legend of Zelda at its darkest), and the atmospheric sound really drives the mood home, especially on the bridge.Read more...

Short for “The Rapture Is Here And You Will Be Forcibly Removed From Your Home,” this is one of the real classics of the walking sim genre. It received, for a game jam game, a lot of press at the time of its release, and still stands as one of the best examples of a “pure” walking sim. Basically, it’s the end of the world, and you have 20 minutes to wander around absorbing the ever-increasing sense of impending doom and listening to narration from the works of HP Lovecraft.Read more...

A collection of beautiful painterly environments to explore. This is actually a whole series - 11 small games in total. I discovered these a few years ago and they are wonderful. Beautiful art, nice sound. Some are downloadable and some run in the browser.Read more...

Beautiful but confusing procedurally-generated walking sim that puts you in a really beautiful forest setting. I really love the graphics and ambiance, but never understood the prompts you get to accomplish goals. Regardless, this is a really beautifula nd relaxing experience.Read more...

One of Connor Sherlock’s more stylized walking sims. Nice graphics, and you can run fast and jump really high, which makes getting around lots of fun. Part of the Zones comp, which collects currently Patreon-only games.Read more...

Another excellent walking sim from Connor Sherlock here, and also part of his first collection of games. Sunken Citadel gives you a torch and sends you deep underground to explore an underground complex that reminds me of Dark Souls’s castle complex in both mood and scale. Navigating the dungeon here is at times claustrophobic and disorienting, and then suddenly sublime and awe-inspiring. It’s also very dark, and I found myself repeatedly expecting something terrifying to appear around a corner.Read more...

One of Connor Sherlock’s best. A long, sometimes frustrating climb up a huge, temple-like building that leads to a sublime reveal. It’s worth the effort to get to the top.Read more...
