Hel is a cool idea: a procedurally generated Norse afterlife where you wander through ominous ruins in the dark night. In practice it’s really nicely done graphically, but super easy to get lost and turned around, and the options are unpolished (it froze for me a couple times). There’s a way to complete the game but I haven’t done it yet…I’ll have to come back to this one.Read more...

Excellent, creepy horror game with a memorable antagonist and nice production. Bonbon puts you in the shoes of a child, and surrounds you with the exact kinds of stuff that shares the crap out of kids. Really well done.Read more...

The Static Speaks My Name puts you in the shoes of an…interesting individual. This is a short, dark, and funny exploration of one very fucked up situation. Not for the kiddies, but worth a spin.Read more...

Another one from Ambient Mixtape 16. Rotting Crescendo puts you alone on a fishing boat in a rough sea, and lets you puzzle it out. I’ve played this several times, mainly because I love the environment/ambiance, but only this last time realized that it’s “winnable” (although, content warning - it’s not kid-friendly at all). Beautiful design and sound.Read more...

Really awesome and creepy horror game. It can be easy to get lost, but worth the long stroll to the finish. I really loved the atmosphere and writing, and the nods to Lovecraft. The original on Game Jolt has been remade - grab the 2017 version from Itch.Read more...

Sanctuary is a dark and atmospheric walking sim that takes place in a supernatural landscape of temples and cubes. It’s actually winnable (follow the paths and the music), and has great sound design and cohesive level design. I really like the aesthetic (somewhere between Dark Souls and Legend of Zelda at its darkest), and the atmospheric sound really drives the mood home, especially on the bridge.Read more...

Woodsy

Made for Ludum Dare, Woodsy puts you alone in the haunted woods, searching for your keys and talking to your creepy neighbors. I don’t want to spoil too much, but this is a cute and novel riff on a few genres (indeed, the jam theme was “2 incompatible genres”) and is worth the ten or so minutes it takes to complete. The game has a lot of personality, and I hope the developers flesh out the concept and/or characters.Read more...
